Great article. I would just add a few details that are sometimes
overlooked.

The statement "Avoid all distractions" needs to be expanded on.
Specifically, look at your background - look for the picture hanging
on the wall that "has always been there" - I have seen a few people that missed that. Take it down for the interview. Same for any other furniture / objects that the interviewer could get distracted with. Usually a plain wall is the best background.

Also, for the most part, look at the camera lens. When you are looking at the frame with the interviewer or the frame with your picture - what the interviewer will see is a person that is NOT making eye contact with him. You don't want to stare at him, but similarly you don't want him to think you are avoiding eye contact. Mix it up, but for the main part, look at the lens.

My camera is built-in at the top of the laptop screen. For these
interviews, I put a small strip of brightly colored tape next to the
lens. That serves as a reminder throughout the interview and forces me to keep looking up.

I am very enthusiastic Marine and Mechanical Engineer who easily takes the initiative. I am seeking for a role in Subsea industry. I believe my highly developed social intelligence and positive approach, combined with my ability to work well under pressure and never-giving-up type of attitude would enable me to make a substantial contribution to your company.

Since August 2012 I have been working with my Mentor (Ole Jørgen Johansen -Statoil Project Manager - Åsgard Subsea Compression) on Subsea Technologies Manual. I am still in close
cooperation with Ole Jørgen constantly improving the Manual as my understanding of Subsea Technologies is getting better. I got in contact with Ole Jørgen since I found the world of Subsea Developments very interesting and the subject was not lectured at my University. My mentor has introduced me to many aspects
within Subsea Technologies and our cooperation is still on-going.
I have in addition successfully completed the OLF Subsea 1 - Subsea Basic Course.

Ole Jørgen has also kindly included me in his extensive network in the Oil and Gas Industry. I believe this will be of great value both for me and my future employer.

Very accurate and helpful! I have a template CV with all of my career past on it and I just copy and paste a new one when applying for a new job. This allows me to edit the CV to highlight my most relevant experience and removing anything that would bore the recruiter!

im also ex army 4 years infantry, no skills currently working on the isle of man at my local gas authority looking for a very basic job on land or offshore rig to build up quals/exp! intelligent, fit and able to start anything as and when I find something, in search of a new life direction.. just needing the opp. This seems to be a case of who you know not what you know, very difficult area of employment to find work after applying with many agencies... any help please email che1986@hotmail.co.uk Thanks
